The Reds have announced an updated pitching lineup:

Dusty Baker has indicated that Harang would probably start on Tuesday but there is nothing official yet.
Reds take series in LA!!!
Thanks to great pitching by Arroyo and clutch hitting from Votto the Reds took two out of three from the Dodgers and continue there stellar trip west. Arroyo showed great control while walking none and striking out six over seven innings. With a one run lead and the bases loaded Votto went down 0-2 and than went on to run the count full and on the tenth pitch lined a single to add two more runs in addition to his earlier opposite field homerun. If the Reds make the playoffs this year and Votto doesn’t fall on his face I can’t see any arguments against him being the MVP. There is no other player in baseball that means more to his team than Joey. If you have any questions look at how the team performed when he was out last season. We are watching the emergence of one of the great players in the game who is finally getting some well deserved national exposure.
Tonight’s Lineup
Courtesy of Mark Sheldon’s Mark My Word blog it looks like Cairo will be helming third base so no Rolen tonight.
Phillip 4
Cairo 5
Votto 3
Gomes 7
Heisey 9
Hanigan 2
Stubbs 8
Janish 6
Arroyo 1
I’m not really sure why Bruce is getting the night off since other than last night he seems to have been heating up, and I’m still not sold on Drew Stubbs with the amount of times he strikeouts. Hopefully Dusty’s lineup juggling magic continues to tonight.
Go Reds!
Can Reds bounce back and start a new streak?
So…last night didn’t go so well. Obviously the rest didn’t really do Cueto much good as his control was definitely missing last night. Arroyo and Kershaw both are coming off quality starts in their last outing, Kershaw went seven scoreless innings against Colorado and Arroyo gave up two runs over 7 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks. Let’s hope Bronson can right the ship and get things back on track. Today’s game would normally be an off day for Scott Rolen (day game following night game) but Dusty Baker said it would be a game-time decision. The Reds gave ten games before meeting back up to battle the Cardinals in St. Louis so the more space we can put between us the better.
Now what about Homer?
We’ve all known the physical skills that Homer Bailey has shown over the past couple years, but now that he’s pitching like we all knew he could do the Reds keep him in the rotation? Obviously Bronson and Cueto have been our most consistent pitchers and Travis Wood has been strong ever since he was brought up. In my opinion of all the pitchers in the rotation Mike Leake shows the most signs of hitting a wall. He’s been great this season, especially considering he hasn’t pitched a single inninng in the Minors. The other option would be a six man rotation with Wood and Leake alternating starts in some form. Finally, I defintely can’t see putting Harang back in the rotation, especially after his first rehab start.
Reds Pitching Staff Questions?
Top two questions facing the Reds Starting Pitchers
1) Can Aaron Harang bounce back from a 6-17, 4.78 ERA year?
As reported by Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, Harang arrived at Reds camp 25 lbs lighter. Looking at Harang’s performance over the past three seasons (16-11 3.76, 16-6 3.73, 6-17 4.78) you’ve got to think that 2008 was an anomaly and he’ll be back in form this season. Dusty was so impressed with his condition upon arriving that he said Harang would be his Opening Day starter at this point.
2) Who will be the Reds fifth starter?
The first four starters are pretty well set; Aaron Harang, Edinson Volquez, Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Cueto. The competition for the fifth spot is about as wide open as the Ohio River. The 2009 Preview by Lindy’s projects Micah Owings, who was acquired in the Adam Dunn trade, to fill the spot. The other familiar name to Reds fans is Homer Bailey (0-6 7.93). Since he was drafted in the first round in 2004, fans have anticipated his arrival and been disappointed with the results. What needs to be kept in mind is that Bailey is only 22 years old and has the obvious physical ability if only he can put it all together. Other names include Daryl Thompson (0-2 6.91) and Ramon Ramirez (1-1 2.67). I would love to see Bailey fill the spot but he is going to have to show that he belongs. These are at least four decent candidates that should be able to pitch .500 ball.
